Nurturing Friendship and Connection

Dar cy E l k s

10th August, 2010

9.30am - 4.30pm

Maroondah Federation Estate

32 Greenwood Ave Ringwood, Melbourne

Relationships are one of the most crucial factors in a human being’s life. Research has

shown that relationships significantly contribute to a person’s well being. For people who

have a disability and other people who have been marginalised and devalued by society, developing

relationships is a critical issue. Although recognising the need for mutually reciprocal

relationships we often struggle with how we might assist people with a disability and

other marginalised people to nature and sustain relationships particularly with other community

members.

This workshop will assist participants to:

Think about how relationships start, develop and grow

The challenges that present themselves when facilitating contacts and relationships between

people who are excluded and those who are part of mainstream society

How to use natural pathways that exist in our society for developing relationships for

all people

This workshop will be of interested to people with a disability, mental illness or other vulnerabilities,

families, advocates and professionals.

Darcy Elks lives in Pennsylvania and is an educator, consultant, evaluator and advocate. The

focus of her work is to encourage attitudes, structures and models which promote social

value and inclusion of people with a disability and others who have been marginalised, devalued

and excluded. Darcy’s passion is the desire to help create inclusive communities

where all people are welcome and where each person can use their gifts for the good of

one another. Darcy is the mother of 3 children, one of which has a disability. .

Cost: $200.00 (inc GST).

Personal Network Facilitator
Saturday, 11 April 2009

Community Connections is interested in speaking to families and individuals who would like to engage the support of a Personal Network Facilitator. Networks operate in a similar way to Circles of Support. A facilitator works with individuals and their families to identify a group of people with similar interests in an unpaid capacity to share in the life of a vulnerable person. This is an intentional undertaking which aims to maximise opportunites for friendship and community inclusion. If you are unsure about the facilitators role or would like more information on Networks, please call Robyn or Alan on 62961133

Planning Alternative Tomorrows with Hope
Saturday, 9 August 2008

PATH    (Planning Alternative Tomorrows with Hope)*

for people with disabilities and their families

Helping you to achieve your goals!

Belconnen Community Service (BCS) has received funding from Disability ACT to:

·         provide families and people with disabilities with the
          opportunity to undertake the PATH process;

is a futures planning tool that can help individuals with disabilities and their families plan and work towards turning their aspirations and dreams into real and possible futures. It is a creative and visual process. PATH participants are given the opportunity to enrol people they would like to help them on their PATH journey. The process helps people identify practical steps that will need to be taken to help them achieve their goals.

The  process is co-facilitated by two people – a process facilitator (Facilitator) and a graphic recorder (Grapher). The facilitator will arrange to meet with you to explain the process and get the ball rolling.  The actual PATH takes approximately 3 hours to complete.

·         If you would like to find out more about the  process:

please contact Louise Bannister, PATH Coordinator, via email at bcs_path@yahoo.com.au
or
phone Sybilla Kovacs, DATS unit, Belconnen Community Service on 6264 0232.
